The Bay Area suburb shrinking faster than any other California city

A Bay Area city is losing residents faster than any other municipality in California, a demographic shift driven by what local officials describe as a "perfect storm" of economic and social pressures. Despite its central location and historic appeal, the suburb has experienced a sharp population decline over the past several years, outpacing even larger urban centers in the state.

The primary factors behind the exodus include the skyrocketing cost of housing, a tight rental market, and a significant shift toward remote work. Many families and young professionals have left for more affordable regions in the Central Valley, the Pacific Northwest, or other states entirely. At the same time, the city's aging population is contributing to the trend, with fewer younger residents moving in to replace those who retire or relocate.

Local planners point to a lack of new housing construction as a key structural issue. Zoning restrictions and high land prices have made it difficult to build the kind of multifamily units that could attract new residents. Meanwhile, the city's school enrollment has dropped, and some small businesses have closed due to reduced foot traffic.

The population loss has real consequences. Fewer residents mean a smaller tax base, which can strain public services like police, fire, and road maintenance. City leaders are now exploring strategies to reverse the trend, including streamlined permitting for accessory dwelling units and incentives for mixed-use development. But with competition from other suburbs and out-of-state destinations, the challenge remains steep. For now, this once-thriving suburb is grappling with an identity crisis, caught between its desirable location and the harsh realities of California's housing market.
