KC's biggest homebuilder could build 468 residential units, commercial space on LDS Church property

Summit Homes, a division of Berkshire Hathaway's Clayton Properties, has submitted plans to develop a large tract of land owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lee's Summit. The proposal calls for up to 468 residential units along with commercial space, to be built in five distinct phases.

The project would transform the church-owned property into a mixed-use neighborhood. While the exact breakdown of housing types has not been finalized, the plan includes a range of options from single-family homes to townhomes and possibly apartments. The commercial component is expected to include retail or office space, designed to serve the new residents and the surrounding community.

Summit Homes is one of the largest homebuilders in the Kansas City area, and this project would mark a significant expansion on the city's south side. The five-phase approach allows for gradual development, with infrastructure and roads built first. The first phase could break ground as early as next year, pending city approvals.

The site is currently undeveloped, and the church has owned the land for years. Local officials have expressed interest in the proposal, noting that it aligns with the city's growth plans. Traffic impact studies and zoning adjustments are still under review. If approved, the development could take several years to complete, adding hundreds of new homes and jobs to the area.
