For years, the dream of homeownership felt like a finish line just out of reach. I saved, I sacrificed, and I watched the market climb. Then, finally, the numbers worked. I had enough for a down payment. I could actually buy a house. But instead of feeling triumphant, I felt trapped.
The more I looked at listings, the more I realized I was searching for a place I barely liked. Every house came with a list of compromises: a cramped kitchen, a long commute, or a yard I did not want to maintain. The idea of being locked into a 30-year mortgage on an asset that did not excite me felt suffocating. I started to question why I wanted this so badly in the first place.
I have decided it is not worth it. The security of ownership comes with a heavy price tag, not just in money but in flexibility. I do not want to be tied down to a property that demands constant upkeep and limits my options. Instead, I am putting my savings toward experiences and investments that give me freedom. I will rent, travel, and keep my options open. For the first time in years, that feels like the real win.
