When investors compare real estate exchange-traded funds, the usual assumption is that more holdings automatically mean better diversification. Schwab's U.S. REIT ETF holds 121 different real estate investment trusts, which sounds impressive on paper. State Street's Real Estate Select Sector SPDR, by contrast, holds fewer names. But the real story is not just about the count.
Schwab spreads its money across a wider range of property sectors, including data centers, cell towers, and self-storage facilities. That breadth reduces the impact of any single company's bad quarter. It also keeps the expense ratio very low, which matters for long-term compounding.
State Street takes a different approach. Instead of loading up on pure REITs, it tilts toward real estate management and development firms, plus some companies that own property but are not structured as REITs. That mix actually lowers the fund's correlation to the broader REIT market. In other words, it diversifies away from the REIT category itself. And right now, that fund yields about 3.2 percent, which is noticeably higher than Schwab's payout.
So which one is more diversified? It depends on what you mean. If you want maximum spread across REIT sub-sectors, Schwab wins. If you want a fund that behaves differently from the REIT index and pays more income, State Street has the edge. For most investors, the choice comes down to whether they want pure real estate exposure or a slightly more blended version. Neither is wrong, but they serve different goals.
