University of Illinois System President Tim Killeen buys $2.1M condo on the New East Side

Tim Killeen, the president of the University of Illinois System, has closed on a new residence in the city's New East Side neighborhood. Property records show the purchase price for the condo was $2.1 million. The move comes as Killeen, who is Welsh-born and trained as a physicist, prepares for his planned retirement at the end of the 2026-2027 academic year.

The acquisition places Killeen in a high-rise building known for its proximity to Millennium Park and Lake Michigan. The New East Side area has seen steady development in recent years, with a mix of older towers and newer luxury constructions. The condo purchase is a personal real estate decision and does not involve university funds or resources.

Killeen has led the university system since 2015, overseeing its three campuses in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago, and Springfield. During his tenure, he has focused on research funding, student enrollment growth, and the system's role in state economic development. His background in physics, with a career that included leadership roles at national laboratories, has informed his emphasis on science and technology initiatives.

The retirement announcement was made earlier this year, giving the board of trustees ample time to conduct a search for his successor. The timeline for the transition aligns with the end of the academic year in 2027. Until then, Killeen continues to manage the system's operations, including its annual budget of over seven billion dollars and its roughly 90,000 students. The condo purchase suggests he plans to maintain a residence in Chicago after stepping down from the presidency.
