Tenants from a residential building in Elmhurst gathered Monday morning to protest what they described as a years-long pattern of neglect from their landlord, A&E Real Estate. The rally took place just hours before a scheduled Housing Court hearing, where residents hope to force the company to address a long list of unresolved maintenance issues.
Residents reported chronic problems including broken elevators, persistent mold, rodent infestations, and inadequate heat during winter months. Many tenants said they have filed multiple complaints with the city and sent repeated requests to management, but repairs were either delayed or ignored entirely.
"We are tired of living in unsafe conditions while the landlord collects our rent," one tenant said during the demonstration. "We want a home that is livable, not one that makes us sick."
The rally drew support from local housing advocacy groups, who argue that A&E Real Estate has a history of neglecting properties across the city. Organizers called on the court to hold the firm accountable and order immediate repairs.
A&E Real Estate has not publicly commented on the specific allegations. The Housing Court hearing is expected to determine whether the company will face fines or be compelled to complete the necessary work within a set timeframe. Tenants say they will continue to organize until their demands are met.
