The city of Kingston and a local real estate company have reached a settlement regarding the controversial removal of more than 40 canopies along Wall and North Front streets. The canopies, part of the city's long-standing Pike Plan, were taken down as part of an uptown revitalization project, sparking debate among preservationists and business owners.
Under the terms of the settlement, the real estate firm will pay an undisclosed sum to the city, while both parties agreed to drop any pending legal claims. The agreement avoids a prolonged court battle that could have delayed further development in the historic district.
The Pike Plan canopies, originally installed in the 1970s, were designed to provide covered walkways and a unified aesthetic for the uptown shopping area. However, some property owners argued the structures were outdated, poorly maintained, and hindered building renovations. The removal process began last year, with crews dismantling the metal and glass awnings over several months.
City officials have stated that the settlement allows them to move forward with streetscape improvements, including new lighting, sidewalks, and landscaping. The real estate company, meanwhile, has agreed to contribute to future public space upgrades in the area.
Local residents remain divided on the issue. Some see the canopy removal as a necessary step toward modernizing uptown Kingston, while others mourn the loss of a distinctive architectural feature that defined the neighborhood for decades. The city has not announced any plans to replace the canopies with a similar structure.
